Gigabyte X58A-UD7, Sata3

So i just purchased myself a new hyper-V host.

Gigabyte-X58A-UD7, 24GB DDR3 RAM, 2 x SATA3.0 (6bps) 600GB WD raptors

Short story – the mavel SATA 3 controller on this motherboard is completely fucking useless.

Add the drives to a RAID-1 set, one constantly just drops out. Try to use the two drives independantly, one randomly dissappear… and the performance from the one that does work is very very average.

Swap them over to use the ICH10 (Sata2) ports…. everything just works.

Save yourself some cash and just get SATA2 drives instead…. and clearly, with SATA3 implementations like this – its not going to be used until an intel chipset comes out with SATA3 inbuilt.

  1. The only thing SATA3 is currently useful if you have a SATA3 SSD.

    Then again, the X58A-UD7 is not aimed at building a home lab – it’s horribly overpriced.

    1. yep – fair call.
      wasnt one of my better decisions…
      the main thing it had going for it (from my point of view) is that i know other people running that Motherboard with 24GB RAM and it is running fine. Not that others wont – but considering none of the motherboard manufacturers will give you any support if you try and run with the maximum amount of RAM on their boards – that was the driving factor.

    I got here via Google search looking desperately for a solution to install Hyper-V onto my GA-X58A-UD7 for I don’t get past the zeroth step of installation. Drivers are needed, it says. None of the available options/versions in the latest pre-install AHCI/RAID iaStor driver package (meant for installing via floppy disk) works.

    Can you, please, help me in as much as telling me what kind of solution/trick you found ;-?

      As soon as i stopped trying to use the SATA 3 controller and reverted back t the on-board sata 2 controller – it all just worked. No drivers required. This was with Windows 2008 R2 RTM.

      It may be a difference in how you have your controller configured in the BIOS. So my suggestion would be to change to AHCI/RAID mode (if your not already) – as thats the mode my drives are in…. and grab the latest intel RST. Im reasonably sure i didnt need it – but it was wa while ago now, so i may be mistaken.
